  • Owen tops Sunderland poll

Owen Hargreaves has narrowly edged out matchwinner Louis Saha to be named United's star performer against Sunderland.

The England star gave a typically tenacious performance in the centre of a crowded midfield, regularly breaking up the Black Cats' forays into dangerous territory.

Hargreaves also came close to bagging his first United goal on two occasions in the second half - once denied by Craig Gordon, once within inches of a spectacular long-range effort.

He saw off the challenge of Louis Saha in ManUtd.com's man of the match poll, amassing 36% of all votes in comparison to the Frenchman's 29%.

Saha was joined in the top three by compatriot Patrice Evra, who notched 13% of all votes cast.

Hargreaves' victory is his third in three appearances, having also taken the plaudits on his debut at Manchester City, and shared the award with matchwinner Nani in the post-Tottenham poll.

  • Hargreaves makes his mark

Owen Hargreaves has been "perfect" on and off the field since arriving at Old Trafford from Bayern Munich, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

And the United boss expects plenty more to come from his tireless new signing as soon as he completely shakes off the tendonitis problem that hindered the start to his Reds career.

The 26-year-old, who is currently away on England duty, has clearly impressed in United's last three matches, earning ManUtd.com's Man of the Match vote in each of the games against Manchester City, his debut, and the wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland. And it isn't only the fans that have been impressed with the Canadian-born midfield man, Sir Alex has been thrilled with his input, too.

"The first thing is, he's a fantastically disciplined professional," the boss tells the latest issue of Inside United, on sale now.

"You can tell he's been brought up well: his good manners, the way he goes about the place, everything's perfect about the boy. It's just a pity the tendonitis in his knee held up his debut."

  • Player of the Month: August

United fans have voted Owen Hargreaves the Reds' Player of the Month for August, even though the 26-year-old played in just two of United's five competitive fixtures.

More than 14,000 ManUtd.com users took part in the poll, which saw the former Bayern Munich midfielder up against Patrice Evra, Nani, Paul Scholes and Nemanja Vidic.

Vidic collected an impressive 27% of the vote after a number of commanding displays at the heart of United's back four, but it was Hargreaves' performances against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur that saw more than 5000 fans vote for the England international.

In the end, Hargreaves, who has won ManUtd.com Man of the Match awards in United's last three matches, scooped 38% of the vote, leaving Evra, Scholes and Nani to share the remaining 35%.

  • Owen Hargreaves pulls out of Sporting Lisbon clash

Owen Hargreaves will play no part in tomorrow's Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon after failing to shake off a thigh strain.

The 26-year-old Manchester United midfielder pulled out of England's recent Euro 2008 qualifying double-header with the problem and also missed United's win at Everton on Saturday.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, was optimistic Hargreaves would be fit for the trip to Portugal - where he would have made his Champions League debut for the club - but he has not yet been able to prove his match fitness after missing a handful of training sessions.

He will now target his side's Sunday meeting with Chelsea. Hargreaves believes his current injury worries, allied to the tendinitis problem which scuppered his pre-season programme and ruled him out of United first two games of the season are related to the broken leg he suffered at Bayern Munich last year.

"It is just disappointing to suffer something so niggly, but I think these injuries come from last season when I broke my leg," he said.

However, United are boosted by the return of Wayne Rooney to the squad for the first time after fracturing his foot on the first day of the season. Nani is expected to feature against his former club, while Carlos Tevez and Anderson will get their first taste of Champions League football for United.

Mikael Silvestre has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing cruciate ligaments on Saturday. John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher, Park Ji Sung and Ben Foster are all out, and Gary Neville is not yet match fit after recovering from a calf strain.
